Pirate Ship Playground in Southeast, Washington, DC

Located in Anacostia Park near the Pennsylvania Avenue bridge, there is a wonderful and quite large pirate ship-themed playground with an adjacent adult fitness center. There's a paved running/biking path (The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail) that runs along the river, so you could combine your playground visit with a stroller run, bike ride, or scootering adventure. There are picnic tables at the nearby Fairlawn Picnic area and restrooms are available too (though they aren't known for their cleanliness). There is a large open space, so park toys are recommended, whether a frisbee, kite or your favorite ball game. The park is also outfitted with tennis courts and basketball courts and also a skate park. A great seasonal outdoor public pool is another popular attraction for community members, so bring your bathing suits in the summer.

The shade in the area is minimal, so be sure to bring sunblock. There is a parking lot right next to the pirate ship. While your kids are having fun playing pirates, you can enjoy the amazing views over the Anacostia River.

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is a lovely oasis to explore in any season, and it is only about a thirteen-minute drive up the river. Alternatively, head the other direction and cross over the bridge to the Navy Yard to explore the new Capitol Riverfront neighborhood. Splash in the water features at The Yards Park during the warmer months, and grab a meal at Due South. Ice Cream Jubilee is right next door also, so pick up ice cream and take a stroll along the river toward the Navy Yard.
