Hanah (yes, the three year old) called a family meeting the other day in hopes that she could convince everyone that she was ready to take on the responsibility of owning a cat.  She made some valid points that could be summed up with "I simply want one", but having never actually met a cat, we decided we should probably get her in front of one. So we planned our first visit to the Animal Adoption Center in town.  Upon walking in, I was so surprised to see a beautifully curated and comfortable waiting area with all of the lovely volunteers and workers friendly lingering about. I signed a waiver for each of us and let the friendly woman in charge explain the rules to the girls.  Kitty City was where we would be heading first. We hand sanitized our hands and agreed to be calm and gentle in the cat's oasis. The kittens had their own separate playroom and we all absolutely melted at the sight of them. The older cats peered at us with curiosity from all angles and corners of the room.  Tunnels, toys, scratching posts, and shelves covered every section of the beautifully sunlit room in a fantastic maze of fun for the cats. They one by one greeted us and entertained the girls dangling cat toys for a few moments at a time. We spent a solid hour in Kitty City before deciding to say farewell and heading over to say hi to the pups.  All but one were out on walks and hikes with locals in town (another really cool feature of this shelter).

I highly recommend this as a rainy day activity or really any occasion activity.  If it's sunny out, take one of the pups to the park or on a walk. If it's raining, hang in Kitty City.  This is a great way to get kids acclimated to animals. Hanah in general can be timid around dogs, but hanging with them in this environment gave her a chance to warm up to them and learn how to properly behave around animals.  We love the Adoption Center!

She spent most of her years before college deeply entrenched in the world of competitive cheerleading before discovering a passion for outdoor sports including mountain biking, white water kayaking, bikepacking, backpacking, slacklining, rock climbing, and skiing. Having been surrounded by children her entire life in her mother's daycare, she always had a strong affinity for kids. She moved to the mountains of Jackson Hole after graduating to coach for the local Kayak Club during the summers and nanny in the winters. Becoming a part of the Happy Active Family team felt like the perfect collision of her passion for building strong community bonds and encouraging an outdoor lifestyle.
