outdoor-adventures, hikes

Take a short hike to Artists' Point or Grand Marais Lighthouse for beautiful views.

When you visit Grand Marais, there are many phenomenal outdoor things to do with kids! If you have tiny trekkers in tow or are looking for a short hike, this may be a great option for you.

From the large public parking lot, head toward the entrance to the lighthouse area. You'll find a small trailing leading through some brush toward a few stairs (there is also a small trail that leads off to the left that will take you directly to Artists' Point). After you go up the steps, access to Artists' Point is to the left, and the Grand Marais Lighthouse is to the right.

Grand Marais Lighthouse

Kids will love walking out to the Grand Marais Lighthouse. It's a reasonably easy walk, but mind the narrow passages and uneven surfaces around the rocks. Make sure you keep kids nearby, as there are many places to fall into the water. While they will love playing in the small tidepools, you don't want them getting into the deeper waters. Families can explore the large rocks that flank the passageway to the lighthouse. You may even find a few fish swimming in the tide pools! Challenge kids to see trees and other plant life growing from the rocks. Then, head out to the lighthouse for a truly spectacular view of downtown Grand Marais and the local Sawtooth Mountains. The Grand Marais Lighthouse is also the best place to catch a sunset in town. Unfortunately, you cannot go inside the lighthouse. During the winter, the Grand Marais Lighthouse may still be accessible. If it is covered with ice and snow, due to winter weather, it will not be accessible.

Artists' Point

Don't miss out on exploring Artists' Point! This easy hike is less than a mile and provides a great view of the flora of the North Shore. On an out and back hike, you will encounter great views of Lake Superior and the town of Grand Marais. This is a great option for families who want to experience nature along the North Shore but don't want to go far from town. It's also a wonderful place to stretch your legs after having dinner at Sydney's, as it's just across the parking lot! Artists' Point is also the best place to see the sunrise in Grand Marais.

Be aware neither of these areas is stroller or wheelchair-friendly. Small kids should be minded very carefully, as the waves and water can be unpredictable. People are able to access this area, but please keep in mind that the US Coastguard has posted a sign to do so 'at your own risk'.
