This outdoor adventure in Austin is adjacent to downtown, so don't miss this funfilled and convenient excursion with kids!

Creativity is king at the 80-acre Austin Nature & Center Science Center, on the western edge of Zilker Park in downtown Austin. Start indoors - the stuffed black bear and transparent beehive near the entrance are always a big hit. Next, check out the collected nature items at the trade counter & store, including bones, shells, and rocks. Have little nature collectors? Wednesday through Saturday, the center lets kiddos trade nature items for points to buy new nature items! Across the hall, check out the hands-on science exhibit, including a man-made cave to explore.

Once you’re ready to venture outside, head over to the rescued animal wildlife exhibit to check out a bobcat, duck, fox, and other wildlife creatures. Then, check out the reptile room or splash around in the shallow creek with a fishing net and watch the minnows swim around your feet (caution: can be slippery so don't hesitate to have water shoes on hand). Walk all the way around the lake to reach the dinosaur fossil pit, where toddler and school-aged children can dig their hearts out in search of replica dinosaur bones. If you’re feeling extra energized, just past the outdoor birds of prey exhibit you’ll find a trailhead into the Zilker Nature Preserve where you can hike and explore cliffs, a creekbed, and other trails on your own to keep the outdoor adventure going.

There is a scavenger hunt that is designed for children from Kindergarten through 5th Grade which involves answering questions to solve a puzzle. Small prizes are available at the front desk when children discover the mystery word and the whole experience is handicap accessible. Visit the website for more information.
