The Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum is down a small side street, just minutes from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The museum was originally comprised of only the small row home where Babe Ruth’s grandparents lived and in which Babe Ruth was born. Decades later, the museum was able to acquire the adjacent row homes and expand into a more comprehensive museum.
Thanks to the help of Babe’s younger sister, visitors today can see a recreation of portions of the home as it existed at the turn of the 20th century and learn about the humble beginnings of this sports legend. Museum goers will also be treated to exhibits showcasing memorabilia from Babe’s illustrious career including bats, balls and uniforms.
This attraction is most appropriate for elementary aged children (ages 8 and up) although younger kids that are really into sports or baseball may be interested as well. If you’re bringing an infant or toddler, a baby carrier may be advisable as the space is small and a stroller may be cumbersome.
This museum is a must see for any sports fan that lives in or visits Baltimore. If you go, do yourself a favor and talk to some of the staff. I can’t say that I’m the biggest sports fan in the world, but after learning more about Babe Ruth’s life and career from some very knowledgeable docents, I was ready to get a Babe Ruth biography and learn more!
