The Baltimore Museum of Art is the perfect place for some free, indoor family fun!

If you’re nurturing a budding artist (or looking for someplace to go when the weather is bad), the Baltimore Museum of Art should be on your to-do list. You can see Asian art from the 2nd century BCE, paintings by Monet, and sculptures by Alexander Calder – BMA's displays truly runs the gamut.

The BMA does not provide a dedicated children’s space but does offer lots of amenities that make it a great choice for families. The museum features a family-friendly audio tour that you can download from iTunes or listen to on a loaner device, a guide for the “Five Things You Can Gently Touch” in the museum, family activity booklets in the African, Modern, and American galleries, as well as a drop-in family art-making session every Sunday afternoon from 2-5 pm!

When you’re done inside the museum, check out the outdoor sculpture garden. The stone paths and beautiful landscaping make it feel like you’ve left Downtown and entered a different space entirely. As with most art, touching is not permitted so make sure to remind little hands about the museum rules.

The BMA is an ideal spot for families that can only spend a short amount of time as entry is always free. Strollers and soft baby carriers that are worn in the front are permitted. Hard carriers and those worn on the back are not allowed. Since a bit of self-control is required, the BMA is not ideal for toddlers that may not be able to adhere to museum expectations.

There is paid street parking on Art Museum Drive and Charles Street. The museum also maintains paid lots. You can find some free street parking in the neighborhood behind the museum and on 29th street. If you’d like to drop little ones off before parking the car, there is a driveway just past the museum on Art Museum Drive where you’ll find a circle to unload passengers.

When you’re done at the BMA, walk Cross Art Museum Drive and enjoy some sun (and running) at the Wyman Park Dell. You can also travel a couple of blocks over on 29th street and grab a bite to eat at R. House or Paper Moon Diner.

Our work in Baltimore is truly a family affair. Husband and wife, Matt and Katie, work together to head up our ambassador team in Charm City. Katie is a Maryland native and has lived in the state her whole life. She moved to Baltimore in 2007 after graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. She has been working in the field of early childhood education as a teacher and family coach for the past 12 years. Katie also holds a Masters of Education in Literacy from Loyola University. She is passionate about giving kids and families the knowledge and tools that they need to thrive. Matt grew up in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore. As a city native, Matt is a great resource on all that the city has to offer. After months of helping Katie explore the city for her role at a Happy Active Family, he decided to put his love of writing to use and officially come on board as an ambassador. Matt and Katie have two girls, ages 5 and 7. They spend their weekends camping, hiking, or exploring other hidden gems in their area. Tap into their insider knowledge by downloading the app today!
