The Barton Creek Greenbelt is one of many areas in Austin to hike, bike, and play.

To be fair, there’s actually several greenbelts in and around Austin, but it’s safe to assume when locals say they’re hiking “the greenbelt,” they’re referring to the nearly 13 miles of the Barton Creek Greenbelt located within city limits. With numerous trailheads and swimming holes (some spots dry up some during long dry-spells), it’s the perfect place to take the kids – and the dogs – and breathe in some sweet Texas air. Hikes vary from short to long, easy to difficult – perfect for explorers of all ages. Stroller runs are possible on some trails, and hikers will be passed by BMXers, but most everyone is good at sharing the space.

During and after heavy rains, areas of the greenbelt can flood and the water level rises high and moves fast so do not visit during city shutdowns. Also, swimming should be avoided directly after heavy rains. Bathrooms are available near the pool and areas of Zilker Park, otherwise, you're on your own. Also, some trails will be busy during the fleeting spring and fall weather.
