A great escape into nature right at Big Reed Pond in Montauk.

If you and your family are looking to hike, look no further than Montauk, although you can’t actually go any further ;)  Surprising to most people is how much available hiking land there is in this beach town.  The Big Reed Pond Nature Trails feature three different trails surrounding a freshwater pond called The Big Reed Pond. The trails are easy to hike, well-kept, and wide.  The primary loop is about a mile in length. Routes are clearly marked with numbered signs along the trail to ensure you are going the correct way.  The trails are located within the Theodore Roosevelt County Park and have been described as, “one of the most botanically rich areas on Long Island with over five hundred species of vascular plants have been documented in the park.”

In addition to hiking, patrons can freshwater fish, canoe, surfcast, hunt, and camp (April-August).  There are no restrooms so I would recommend making sure everything is taken care of before heading out.  The parking is limited and a quick turn off the highway.  The trail is lightly trafficked by humans.  I have actually never seen others on the trail while I was hiking.  The trail is highly populated by animals, even if you don’t see the animals, you will see their droppings.  Watch where you walk!
