Nestled right in the middle of neighborhoods, this preserve is worth coming to in a BIG way.
Big Rock Nature Preserve is named for the granite boulders sitting in the middle of the preserve. With 22 acres to explore, there is a small trail loop in addition to the fun boulders to climb and see. This is the smallest of the preserves in Charlotte, but it is still loads of fun to go to. This area is also considered historic due to some evidence of Native American habitation some 7,000 years ago.
Parking is located along the street, and the entrance is right near the road. There is a small trek along the trail, and you will come right to the boulders. You can walk past the rocks, and the trail takes you along 4 Mile Creek and back up to the rocks to complete the loop. Kids of all ages will have fun exploring the rocks and climbing. The area is fairly shaded so in the warmer months it’s not too hot.
This preserve is close to shopping, movie theaters, and restaurants. This is a perfect place to visit in between errands.
