The Botanic Garden and Conservatory is a lovely place to explore.
The Cheyenne Botanic Garden and Conservatory are surprisingly wonderful, especially for a town the size of Cheyenne. The large conservatory was built recently, and it stays warm and bright year-round. It is especially perfect for a cold and windy Wyoming day. It has a short walking path and a small stream with big, lazy goldfish that the kids love to search for and find. There's plenty to discover, from teeny-tiny flowers to tree leaves that are bigger than my 9-year-old, and even a life-size elephant made entirely from twigs! Keep your eyes out for the fairy garden where lots of itty-bitty fairies like to hide.
Upstairs features quite a few more plants, a pretty birdcage, and a few classrooms. Be sure to find the classroom with the microscopes and the conservatory’s unique Navy submarine periscope that looks out over the city.
Outside, follow the meandering paths and streams of the Botanic Gardens. In the summer, the whole area is chock full of trees, flowers, and other plants, as well as lots of bunnies and birds. We have three favorite spots:
- My son's favorite spot is the Rotary Plaza area, which tells the story of plants and people native to Wyoming and you can learn about the early settlers. Follow the path to the center, and you'll find a big steam train engine that was generously donated to the gardens.
- My daughter's favorite activity while visiting is walking or running in the labyrinth maze.
- My favorite spot is a little swing in the rose garden - a perfect place to relax.
The area also features a community garden where residents are invited to cultivate their own garden plot for a small fee.
Nearby the gardens you can find the Paul Smith Children's Village, Lions Park and Playground, and the Treehouse.
