Loop Around Cumberland Mountain State Park with this Rewarding, Flat Hike which is Under 3 Miles!
To get a feel for the beautiful Cumberland Mountain State Park, we hiked 2.8 miles around the "Byrd Lake and Pioneer Short Loop Trail". This loop starts directly from the Park Office at the front of the park and begins paved so this part is great for strollers. This section is also a "story walk" for younger children with several boards along the way with nature rhymes and quick activities.
You can simply do a paved loop, or you can keep going and extend with the Pioneer Short Loop. The Pioneer Short Loop hugs along the lake and then ultimately crosses with a great swinging bridge. Along the way there are some wonderful boulders and places to go directly to the shores of the lake. This is VERY flat so it's really easy for kids and families with grandparents, etc.
The end goes near the beautiful bridge and dam and old Mill House (which was recently renovated).
