Caledonia State Park Campground Near Gettysburg, PA is a Family Fun Getaway Near D.C.
Located about a two-hour drive from DC at 101 Pine Grove Road, Fayetteville, PA 17222, Caledonia State Park offers a fun weekend camping option in southern Pennsylvania. There are tent and trailer sites offered over two campgrounds (one of which, Hosack Run, is usually pet-friendly). The Hosack Run campground was rehabilitated during the 2019 season, so it's quite nice. The Chinquapin Hill campground offers semi-shaded campsites with a tent pad, fire ring, and picnic table. Try to book a campsite on the outer side of the campground loop, as the campsites on the interior side are very close together. In particular, campsites 93, 94, and 95 are conveniently located to the facilities, but also offer a bit of privacy and space.
There is a small playground at the campsite and swimming pool which charges a fee for use (with a discount for swimmers arriving after 4 pm), as well as a rushing stream which people were paddling and floating in. There are lots of great hikes that start near the campground for hikers of varying abilities. We did the Charcoal Hearth hike with a group of eight-year-olds, and they all made it through the challenging 2.7-mile hike but were definitely beat at the end. The park also offers blacksmith demonstrations each day at noon throughout the summer. The park is also very close to Gettysburg, an amazing site to visit for a dose of Civil War history.
