Caumsett State Park is lovely and worth a drive to explore.

If you’re anywhere mid-island on Long Island and looking for a good place to stroller run, look no further than Caumsett State Historic Park. Set on over 1,000 acres of a former family estate, the historic park is now home to paths for horseback riding, birding, walking, cycling, and of course, stroller running. The most popular route is a roughly 3.5-mile loop that will take you past meadows, horse stables, wooded areas, a historic Gold Coast mansion and more.

If your kids are older, then pack scooters and bikes for the loop, instead! You can pause and picnic in any of the park’s meadows, take a detour on a nature trail or walk the optional loop down to the beach that overlooks Long Island Sound. The steep incline is well worth it for the views and sand play that await.

Restrooms are located at the office just off the parking lot, as well as about halfway around the loop. Bathrooms aside, there is not much in the way of amenities here, including no café area, so be sure you’ve packed everything you’ll need for the day.

Through trial-and-error, we have learned that there’s a sweet spot in age for bringing your kids here. It’s fantastic if your kids are very young (and still sitting in that running stroller!) and also if they’re old enough to peddle their bikes the whole way. There is a rougher patch for toddlers who might not yet have the stamina since once you’re on the loop, there’s no way to stop halfway. One good solution? Bring your baby in the stroller and strap on a runner board in case a big sibling’s let's get tired!
