Escape to a quiet retreat at Deerwood Arboretum and Nature Area for some fresh air exploring with little ones.

With 27 acres of land and a short, flat loop, Deerwood Arboretum and Nature Area is the perfect place for a short nature break – especially if the kids want to ride their bikes or scooters. The course runs just under a mile and leashed dogs are welcome to tag along. Nearing the loop’s halfway mark you’ll find a lovely section of the Harpeth River where we like to free-forest for a while. (Note: It’s more like a creek – very shallow and slow-moving – so it’s perfect for tiny kiddos.)

A “Little Library” greets you at the trailhead – always a good sign – and the park is sparsely populated with other people. What it lacks in people, the park makes up in trees. There are over 60 tree species in the park, which are documented throughout for some educational moments as well - there is a useful guide for identifying native trees in the parking lot. Plus, they provide a lovely shade covering and reprieve from Nashville’s sunshine. At the right times of the year, the wildflowers are beautiful and abundant and you can often see migratory birds and other wildlife.

Facilities include walking trails, an outdoor classroom, restrooms (only open during events), a water fountain, an observation deck, and a small amphitheater. While it is tucked into a residential neighborhood, it feels like a nice nature break, so bring a picnic and enjoy!
