At the base of Wintergreen, Devil's Backbone Basecamp Brewpub and Meadows is a great stop with or without kiddos!

The name Devil's Backbone came from a nickname historically given to the region, as far back as Thomas Jefferson's dad when referring to the home of the brewery, smack dab in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This place is a great place to slow down, kick back and relax, whether in front of a fire pit. The owners' slogan is Slow By Nature, and it's not just a slogan, they say, it's how they live and how they hope to inspire people to feel like slowing down when visiting their two locations, the outpost in Lexington, Virginia and the Brewpub in Roseland (Nelson County).

Reservations are accepted (not super common for this type of spot) and you can request an indoor table, a covered table, an outdoor firepit, or even a heated area. They have a secret garden area for up to eight people, which is perfect for groups with kids because the paid reservation ($25 for two hours) comes with a S'Mores kit for four, in addition to eight Adirondack chairs, a fire pit, and full service (including to tend the fire pit).

This place is also super-unique because they welcome campers on their 92 acres and have a variety of camping options, including traditional camping as well as RV hookups. The best part is the campsites within walking distance of the Brewpub itself. They also have two houses people can stay at, often used when renting the space for private events.

The Devil's Backbone logo is a familiar one, especially in the DC area where the Vienna Lager can be found in so many bars and most places where beer is purchased! Don't miss a chance to check out what they are all about when you are in the area.

The Brewpub has ready-to-drink cocktails and wine is also available. They have a full menu and an additional kids' menu with options that include burgers, mac and cheese, chicken fingers and pulled pork sammies. Your kids will also love the opportunity to run and play and make S'mores in such a laid-back place.
