Take a ride on the historic Duquesne Incline in Pittsburgh, PA!

The Duquesne is one of two inclines that still serve Pittsburgh today. If you’re not familiar with what an incline is, it’s a car that runs on a cable and tracks up and down a very steep hill. Think of it like a trolley that goes up the side of a mountain. Numerous inclines have serviced the area over time. Pittsburgh visitors have the opportunity to experience a bit of Pittsburgh’s history with this unique ride.

The Duquesne Incline was opened in 1877 and still uses the original cars that served its original passengers. Its upper station is located in the Mt. Washington neighborhood while the lower station serves the South Side. Visitors can park in a free public lot at the lower station at 1197 West Carson Street. Note: There are quite a few steps between the parking lot and the station so wheelchairs and strollers would not be advisable.

While riding the incline is fun, the highlight is really the view from the top. When you exit the upper station, you’ll be able to take in the sweeping views of the city and all three of its rivers from an overlook next to the station. For an even better view, turn right as you exit the station and head up the small hill. You’ll come to the Point of View Statue, a statue of George Washington and Seneca Leader Guyasuta meeting. From there you can have an unobstructed view of the city below.

The area around the upper station of the Duquesne is a bit more upscale than the upper station of the Monogahela Incline and provides mostly fine dining options for visitors. (If you’re looking to find a more family-friendly option, you can take the Scenic Byway Walk that connects the Monogahela Incline and Point of View Statue. It’s around 1.5 miles and has some restaurants and shops along the way. Additionally, you’ll find even more family-friendly dining options near the lower station of the Monogahela.)

It is important to note that the Duquesne Incline accepts CASH ONLY!!! Be sure to come prepared! (The Monogahela Incline accepts credit cards if you don't have cash on you!)

Overall, if history and a great view is what you’re in search of, a ride on the Duquesne Incline is the way to go!
