A quick and easy way to take in the diverse landscape of San Francisco is the Ecology Trail at the Presidio.

This 1.4-mile family-friendly trail inside San Francisco's National Park by the Golden Gate Bridge takes on average about 28 minutes to complete and is low grade, making it perfect for children. Take or rent bikes or travel by foot through this environment rich with a diverse variety of habitats. It’s the perfect activity to participate in if you only have a short amount of time in the Presidio and want to take in its full breadth of nature. There is a small detour to Inspiration Point Overlook that you can take and see views of the Bay and Alcatraz. One of the other connection trails is El Polin Spring, which is home to beautiful butterflies and hummingbirds.

The Presidio offers a number of activities for families, just stop by the Presidio Visitor Center (open daily from 10 am-5 pm ) and ask about the StoryWalk, Geocaching scavenger hunts, or checking out a Presidio Explorer backpack for an outdoor nature adventure. You can find restrooms at the Presidio Golf Course and Presidio Officers’ Club.

If feeling extra adventurous, check out the Presidio’s Rob Hill Campground, which is one of the only campgrounds in all of San Francisco! Only open April 1 - October 31st, check their website for more information on booking tent sites.

Emily Coleman
Emily Coleman is a Jersey girl born and raised who caught the outdoor bug upon moving to Vermont to pursue a degree in Adventure Education and Environmental Studies from Green Mountain College. She spent most of her years before college deeply entrenched in the world of competitive cheerleading before discovering a passion for outdoor sports including mountain biking, white water kayaking, bikepacking, backpacking, slacklining, rock climbing, and skiing. Having been surrounded by children her entire life in her mother's daycare, she always had a strong affinity for kids. She moved to the mountains of Jackson Hole after graduating to coach for the local Kayak Club during the summers and nanny in the winters. Becoming a part of the Happy Active Family team felt like the perfect collision of her passion for building strong community bonds and encouraging an outdoor lifestyle.
