Fort Fisher State and Recreation Area
1000 Loggerhead Road
Very cool place to drive your 4WD on the beach!
Fort Fisher Recreation Area has six miles of protected shoreline from the ocean to the river - it's absolutely stunning. There are trails that go through the marsh and loggerhead sea turtles nest along the sea shore during the summer months.
The best part about Fort Fisher is driving on the beach, one of the few places on the East Coast that allows you to do this. There are tips for making sure your 4WD is ready for the loose sand and you must get a permit. Popular for surf fishing, shelling, birding and walking through unprotected shores and trails.
4WD Beach Access - Mon-Fri $20/day, Sat/Sun $30/day, Season Permit $75.
The parking area is near the Park Office/Exhibit Hall, changing area and showers, and shaded picnic area with grills. Dogs on leashes are allowed on the beach year round. There is a boating ramp and paddling launch nearby.
