Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America in Northwest, Washington

Four blocks from the Brookland metro sits a beautiful monastery surrounded by colorful seasonal gardens and wide walking paths. The website describes it as an oasis of peace, and I couldn't agree more. When I lived in DC, it was one of my favorite spots to bring the kids. We would often meet for playdates and picnics near the small fish pond or one of the many chapels scattered on the grounds.  They loved to walk or scooter around the winding paths and admire the flowers, toss their balls, or blow bubbles. The rose garden is stunning and the vegetable garden produces thousands of pound of food that is donated to non-profits in the area. On Saturdays from April to September you can get a free tour from a docent. They'll teach you about the history, architecture, flowers, vegetable garden, and bee hives on the grounds. This is also a great spot to walk around with a coffee from one of the spots next door to get some energy while you explore the beautiful gardens.

If you are looking for a respite from the busy city this fits the bill. Even if you only have a few days in the city this place is not to be missed. If your kids have too much energy and are looking for a playground nearby Turkey Thicket Recreation Center is a few minutes away. If you're interested in a pizza picnic, Menomale is right down the street and is super yummy. Masala Story is also nearby and offers a great introduction to Indian food for little ones.
