Located in the heart of Historic Downtown Charleston, those looking to soak up some culture will find comfort in the Gibbes Museum of Art.  Along with an impressive assemblage of permanent collections on display at the museum, the Gibbes also presents six to eight special art exhibitions each year.  When we visited, the special exhibition was titled “Central To Their Lives: Southern Women Artists” and featured pieces from prominent female artists that helped preserve the South’s rich history, as well as shape its artistic style. This particular museum might be more geared toward families with older children that can appreciate the art and history behind it. Before or after meandering through the museum’s collections, pop into The Daily cafe on the first floor for a snack or caffeine pick-me-up or take a load off in the courtyard and relax.
