Greeter Falls Road, Altamont, TN 37301
A short, loop hike with a magnificent waterfall.
Magnificent Waterfall 40 minutes from Monteagle/Sewanee Area
Greeter Falls is incredibly rewarding after only a short walk from your car. Cross the parking lot across from the road where you drove in and parked to start the trail. Follow the signs all the way down to the base of the falls. There are some interesting rock formations along the way but the real highlight is the waterfall with a gorgeous blue pool at the base. The hike is really not that difficult (we did it with 4 kids - ages 6, 5, 4, and 2.5 years old) but you'll find yourself going through fairly steep sections with narrow paths and boulders and a spiral metal staircase and then several wooden stairs just before the falls. So you will need to be very careful and hold the hands of small children or have them on a carrier on your back. After you explore the base of the falls, you can easily veer towards the upper falls, which are beautiful with smaller rapids and nice pools (be careful as it is slippery). The trail can be a loop but our family simply went to the lower and upper falls and then headed back to the car. It was a fantastic, family-friendly hike that everyone loved, and fall weather and leaves made it perfect!
If you haven't had enough waterfalls, drive 30 minutes, and see the equally beautiful Foster Falls.
Tips: Go in the fall when there are fewer crowds, the weather is cool and crisp, and the leaves are changing.
