Classic, Gorgeous Waterfall Hike in Middle Tennessee

The Grundy Day and Fiery Gizzard Loop Trail is simply gorgeous - it's pristine and one of my favorite hikes in Tennessee.  In fact, Fiery Gizzard is ranked as one of the top 25 overnight trails in America.  While the whole Fiery Gizzard trail is much longer, requires camping, and a bit too difficult to traverse with kids (my husband and I completed it prior to having kids), this 3 mile loop gives you several highlights of the area with lots of water features and is doable for a 1/2 a day trip with kids.  There are several steep sections, several rocky sections, and a river crossing to Sycamore Falls required us walking across a downed log (bridge had washed away at time of writing) - so be prepared.  I think toddlers are really too young to best enjoy.  But older childrens will enjoy the challenge and opportunities to hop into swimming holes along the way.  There is lots of shade but bring sunscreen for the pool areas.

I like hiking counter clockwise.  Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Tip: make sure to take the extra mile to see Sycamore Falls!  Go early in the day during peak periods to avoid crowds.
