A great local hike for all ages in Austin!

Part of the Greenbelt system, a trail stretching nearly 8 miles and following Barton Creek, Gus Fruh is a short shaded hike down to a creek-fed pool and pebble “beach” kids love to explore. For the best experience, make sure your family wears comfortable clothes (or a swimsuit with a change of clothes), shoes that can get wet, and brings plenty of bug spray and drinking water. Leave strollers at home, as the trail is steep at times, and wear your baby if possible. About ¼ of a mile down, you’ll notice a fork in the trail. If with young children (toddlers), take the path on the right, as it is less rocky and steep. When you arrive at the creek, explore the area as you may find turtles, fossils, cool rocks, and native plants and insects. For fun, bring some beach supplies like a shovel, pail, and net.

The creek water varies depending on the season. Throughout the area, there are some shallow areas that can be crossed by foot, some deeper swimming holes, and even some rapids. Other times of the year it is dry.
