Revel in the Flora and Fauna of Hidden Oaks Nature Center in Annandale, Virginia!
Hidden Oaks is located within Annandale Park and we started our most recent visit inside the Nature Center to meet resident animals, view the creative exhibits and play with the available toys, including animal costumes and a tea set which is always a big hit. The bathrooms, though dated, were very clean. Before we hit the trail we inquired at the desk about its length and the naturalist on hand was friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She provided the relevant information, offered a map and then guided us to a window in an adjacent room set up as a classroom and potential party area. She pointed out a chainsaw artist at work and his recent masterpiece carved from a large tree trunk standing just outside the window. The kids selected their favorite of the many animals he created within the sculpture and this gave us a great opportunity to guide the kids out to see the carvings up close, with less resistance considering they were thoroughly enjoying their tea party.
The trail primarily consists of two loops, one of which is stroller friendly, the longer route is not. While there is an elevation shift, an open bridge and some rocky terrain around and over the stream, it is doable for preschoolers that are sturdy on their feet. It is a short hike, at under a mile between the two loops, but there was active wildlife and scenery and it was a perfect length for little ones who like to stop and examine things up close.
We finished our visit at "Nature Playce," a poison ivy free area where kids are welcome to make contact with nature, get dirty and even make mud pies or build a fort if they so desire. There are various play areas and a small pond home to various creatures.
If your're looking for a snack before or after your trip to the nature center, Breeze Bakery Cafe is super close. They have ice cream if you're looking for a sweet treat and sandwiches if you're looking for a full meal! If you're looking for a sitdown meal, Silverado is also nearby. They have a great kids menu and yummy options for parents too.
