Homestead is the Perfect Farm for a Fun Fall Afternoon With Your Family!

If you are looking for a fun activity for the whole family this weekend, Homestead Farm is the perfect place.  About an hour's drive from Northern Virginia, it's tucked away in the farm fields of Southern Maryland. With their own pumpkin patch, farmers market, a place to pick your own flowers and farm animals to see, it's a great way to spend a weekend morning.

We arrived around 10 am on a Saturday and it was busy but not so much that people were on top of one another.  Parking is pretty easy with employees guiding you to where you can park. Masks are required throughout the property.  There is a $2 entry fee for guests.  Babies are exempt. There are only port-a-potties on-site, so if you need to change your little one, your car is the only place available. The farm is stroller friendly, but you could get away with a wearable carrier for a little one, or depending on the age of your child they could ride in the cart which was a fun adventure for our 2-year-old.  The farmers market is covered, but the rest of the farm is open-air, so if it is a sunny day, you may want to bring hats and sunscreen for your little ones.

Once in, we picked up our cart and headed to the pumpkin patch.  There were lots of pumpkins to choose from and we found there was a good selection of smaller pumpkins available making it great for little ones to take part in the 'picking.' There is wonderful peach picking and more depending on the season! If picking isn't your thing, there are bins of pre-picked pumpkins as well as gourds, squash, and apples to take home.  There are plenty of goods to make your favorite pumpkin pie or apple cobbler. Their mum selection was great as they were just starting to bloom, making it the perfect time to get them home to flourish on your front porch.  The market had local honey, fruits, and veggies as well as yummy apple cider.

The most exciting part of the farm for our kids was the animals. They had goats, baby goats, pigs, chickens, and llamas in pins at the back of the market. Kids did great with taking turns and keeping a good distance at each pin.  Another fun activity was playing and jumping off the hay bales.  Our daughter could have spent hours climbing and jumping.

This is a true farm/farmers market with picnic tables under a covered area to sit and eat your goodies. If you would rather enjoy a picnic lunch, there is an area for that too!

If you don't make it out this fall, plan a visit in December where you can cut down your own Christmas Tree!
