I had no idea there was this hidden gem on the way to Glacier National Park!

Hungry Horse Dam is a scenic, historical, and fun pitstop near Glacier National Park. And my kids had never seen anything like it, so it was cool to introduce them to a sight they'd never seen before.

Hungry Horse Dam was completed in 1953 and was an historic feat for the time. This dam's spillway is the highest morning glory structure in the world. Yep, not just in the United States, but in the whole world. And clocking in at 564 feet high, this arch dam was the 3rd largest and 2nd highest dam in the world at the time of its construction. The dam's primary purposes are to provide hydroelectric power for the area and to provide flood control.

There are spots to see the dam from both the bottom, as well as the overlook above. I highly recommend you take the time to see the dam from above, as I was underwhelmed by the view from the bottom. Unfortunately, at the bottom, there is a high fence around the dam, which really prevents you from seeing the full beauty of the dam, as well as from snapping some nice photos of the area. From the top, we were able not only to see the actual dam from a scenic viewing area, but we were able to snap some really nice photos, as well. There are several pull-overs from above, and some even have picnic areas in which you can take a break and have a snack. All the parking is free, and you're even able to drive across the top of the dam itself, which the kids thought was super fun!

After enjoying the views and history of Hungry Horse Dam, head about 15 miles down to road to get lost in glorious Glacier National Park. You won't regret it!
