Iron Born Pizza in Pittsburgh, PA doesn't disappoint!

Detroit-style pizza is a delicious, square shaped thick crust version of everyone’s favorite, and few are doing it better than Iron Born Pizza in Pittsburgh.  The Millvale location is nestled into the very hip and walkable town of Millvale.  It’s takeout only so we checked out the town while we waited and thoroughly enjoyed the community vibe.  Not having a dining area was no problem for us because the Millvale River Front Park was a 5-minute drive, so we were able to dine al fresco in a pavilion by the water.  Street parking was metered and plentiful during our visit.

The pizza is made using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.  There’s peperoni and cheese for traditionalists, but the menu offerings have something for your most adventurous family members.  Try the Commonplace Coffee Pie made with smoked pork, coffee barbecue sauce, pickled jalapeno and red onions or the Forager Pie made with white sauce, mushrooms, ricotta, local honey and herbs.  Their vegan pie is made with almond spread as a cheese replacement, red sauce, roasted tomatoes, mushrooms and herbs.  Of course, you can always construct your own creation at $2 per topping.  The pizzas are all approximately 10” wide (and about 2” thick!) so be prepared for a hearty meal.  Soft drinks, salad and some dessert options are available as well, check the menu online for additional details and to see what may or may not be available on any given day.

Be aware that Iron Born is taking pizza to the next level; this is not your traditional slice. If you have a very picky eater in the crowd, Iron Born pizza may be hit-or-miss!

Our work in Baltimore is truly a family affair. Husband and wife, Matt and Katie, work together to head up our ambassador team in Charm City. Katie is a Maryland native and has lived in the state her whole life. She moved to Baltimore in 2007 after graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. She has been working in the field of early childhood education as a teacher and family coach for the past 12 years. Katie also holds a Masters of Education in Literacy from Loyola University. She is passionate about giving kids and families the knowledge and tools that they need to thrive. Matt grew up in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore. As a city native, Matt is a great resource on all that the city has to offer. After months of helping Katie explore the city for her role at a Happy Active Family, he decided to put his love of writing to use and officially come on board as an ambassador. Matt and Katie have two girls, ages 5 and 7. They spend their weekends camping, hiking, or exploring other hidden gems in their area. Tap into their insider knowledge by downloading the app today!
