Conveniently located with gorgeous mountain views this is a great place to get a workout!

Iron Mountain is one of the most popular trails in San Diego due to its reasonable driving distances of most of San Diego and its level of difficulty. This hike is a great option where you won't drive too far to get panoramic mountain views while getting your heart rate up in nature. It is recommended to come early to beat the crowds and the heat. There is a parking lot and porta-potty's available. Also, bring a lot of water and then double that amount, you won't be sorry as you make the 1,000 ft elevation climb. This hike has very little shade coverage but boasts gorgeous views. Strollers are not advised, the trail gets narrow and uneven shortly after the start. Baby carriers will be best here along with tennis shoes and typical workout gear, throw on your hiking boots if you're looking for that extra ankle support.

You'll start your hike from the main staging area at the intersection of Highway 67 and Poway Road. From the parking lot, you will cross under an elaborate trail sign and over a bridge as you follow the trail through a beautiful thicket of oak trees. Enjoy this shade, it's about all there is. From here the trail follows left through a meadow and eventually you'll start the switchback climb up the mountain, you'll see the peak in view on your right. You'll pass a helicopter pad about halfway up the trail, this is a reminder of why you brought all that water, this trail gets very hot especially in the summer months, many people have been airlifted out. This is not meant to scare you away though, this is a friendly reminder to always bring more water with you than you think you'll need - remember, San Diego is a desert! Near the helicopter pad, you'll come across signs leading you to the summit. Along the final switchback, ascent take in the beautiful mountain views surrounding you, you don't feel like you're in a city anymore. The giant boulders littering the mountainsides add to the picturesque landscape.

At the peak, you will enjoy a thoughtful bench and viewfinder where on a clear day you can spot iconic landmarks such as Seaworld, Coronado, Point Loma, Mission Bay and Downtown. Although the best lunch spot is atop a giant boulder that surrounds the area. Either way, take a seat and enjoy the views you've earned!
