Island Getaway in Holbox

Holbox is about a two-hour drive and then a 30-minute ferry from Cancun to the island. Our hotel - Villas Flamingos - arranged all transport for us. There are no cars on the island and the main transport is motorcycles, bikes, and beach buggies/golf carts.

Villas Flamingos is, of now, the farthest place to stay from town - about a 15-minute walk or quick cycle.  We stayed in the honeymoon suite, which had an outdoor shower, jacuzzi tub, and an elevated interior massive shower. There is an air conditioner in the room, the staff was pleasant, and the restaurant/bar on-premise was great. They can organize tours (we did a whale shark day trip), massages, etc. there are bikes and paddleboards to borrow on-site. One swimming pool and two soaking pools right on the beach offered fantastic sunset views. We would highly recommend this spot for couples as well as families.

The whale shark day trip was amazing but a long day, about two hours boat drive in rough waters to get there, but then swimming with the sharks was once in a lifetime. Stopped on way back for snorkeling (rays, turtles, fish) and trip in the lagoon to see flamingoes and other birds.

Best restaurant we ate at was Holbox Casa Las Tortugas (mandarina restaurant)

While we didn’t eat here (it was not kid-friendly) we heard it is delicious molecular cuisine on the town square.

Holbox is known for lobster pizza, get it at Roots and order the Frida Kahlo cocktail (delish).

We ate one night at Villas HM Paraíso del Mar (all you can eat/drink buffet) and it was a good atmosphere, and great with kids but we weren’t that impressed with the food.

Tips - bring mosquito repellant; ATMs don’t always work.
