Short Hike to a Historic Rock

Right along the Appalachian Trail, above town and the impressive St. Peter’s Catholic Church is the historical rock named for Thomas Jefferson. Another vantage point of the incredible views of Harpers Ferry, Jefferson took in the sight on October 25th, 1783 from these slabs of rock. He later called it “one of the most stupendous scenes in Nature” in his Notes on the State of Virginia.

Walking or climbing the rock is forbidden, but it is certainly still worth the climb to experience it. Unfortunately, the rock is not handicap accessible.

Make sure to stop at The Point as well - a significant part of the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park! It's an absolutely unbelievable spot where the Shenandoah breaks off of the Potomac River. If you're looking for more hiking trails along the Appalachian Trail, there are plenty to choose from!

Grab dinner in town, check out the candy store, or grab ice cream from Creamy Creations. The Harpers Ferry Train Station is fun to check out and a great spot for even more photo ops. To be honest, the whole town/park produces incredible opportunities for photos. This would be a great place for a professional shoot, in fact we left with pictures on our phones that looked professionally done based on the charming and unique settings.

The address listed here is to the St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church which you must pass coming from The Point, as well as the ruins of St. John's Episcopal Church to reach Jefferson Rock on the Appalachian Trail.
