Jerusalem Mill Historic Village in Baltimore is the perfect place to learn through living history!
Jerusalem Mill is a historic village located on the grounds of Gunpowder Falls State Park. The site features a variety of historic buildings, from a 1772 grist mill all the way to a general store built in 1930.
While visitors can view the buildings from the outside on any day, weekends are really the best time to take in the history. The Visitor Center, blacksmith shop, and general store are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4pm. On Sunday afternoons, the Miller’s House is also staffed with interpretive history volunteers that demonstrate activities that were essential to daily life in the 18th and 19th centuries.
When buildings are open, you can view the historic items housed inside and interact with the knowledgeable volunteers (all dressed in period garb, of course). All of the staff at Jerusalem Mill are very friendly and eager to teach visitors about the rich history of the area. Most importantly, they're happy to answer any and all questions posed by the youngest visitors to the mill.
In addition to a wonderful cultural experience, the village provides great hiking. For a short walk, follow the stone path behind the Miller’s House. Cross the bridge and continue following the path until you get to the huge stone barn. Follow the path to the right and you’ll see the Jericho Covered Bridge.
For a longer trek, take the gravel path that leads from the main visitor parking lot. This is the beginning of the Little Gunpowder Trail and also leads to the Jerusalem Mill Trail. The trails total about four miles and are moderately difficulty. (The gravel leads onto natural surface trail that is not appropriate for strollers).
There is a bathroom available for use when the Visitor Center is open. Otherwise, there is a portable toilet located in the visitor parking lot. There are tons of picnic tables located throughout the village, but trash cans are limited. All of the buildings are connected via gravel walkways making it possible, albeit a little bumpy, to use a stroller on the grounds.
Jerusalem Mill is a great option for families that are looking to shake up the weekend routine and experience something different!
