J.J. Byrne Playground is a play area within Washington Park.

The playground, located at 5th Avenue and 3rd Street, is a busy and active neighborhood gem, always filled with kids. Unlike some other playgrounds, this one attracts older children with to its challenging climbing structures. You'll find playground staples like swings, tunnels, jungle gyms, bridges, and slides, as well as a gated toddler area on the 3rd Street side.

In summer, the Parks Department turns on the many water features, so be sure to come prepared with a bathing suit and towel. In addition to the playground, the larger park is host to a skatepark, basketball courts, a popular dog run, a multi-use synthetic turf field. In the middle of the park, you'll find the beautiful Old Stone House (circa 1699) which is now an interpretive and educational center dedicated to Brooklyn history (and also host to bathrooms).

Renee was born in rural Maine and spent her childhood days playing in the woods and tending to her family's farm animals and large garden. She's spent the last 20 years far from her rural roots, living in large cities both in the US and abroad. Her family -- including her two daughters, age 6 and 10 -- just recently located to Brooklyn, New York after spending two years living abroad in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Renee looks forward to exploring and discovering all of the active, family-friendly activities that Brooklyn has to offer!
