Listed among Anthony Boudain's "13 Places to Eat Before You Die," Joe's is a must-visit when traveling to KC.

Now, when I travel somewhere, I like to feel the culture of the place we're visiting, and part of that is trying local foods. In Kansas City, that means you should definitely try the barbeque. Joe's is one of the most highly-recommended barbeque joints in KC, and yes, it certainly was a top pick of the one and only Anthony Bourdain. It was also chosen as a Travelers' Choice Award Winner for 2020 on Tripadvisor.

Joe's was among the first restaurants we tried out when we drove into town, and the kids loved it, too. If you enjoy unique restaurants, this place is a great choice for you, as it is the original Joe's and it's located in a gas station. Yep, you heard that right, there's a gas station there, too, which both confused and delighted me when I saw it. They offered a wonderful curbside drive-up service, and though the line of cars was fairly long, it moved quickly. We tried out their signature burnt ends sandwiches, along with a side of mac 'n cheese. You can't go wrong with mac 'n cheese for kids, and they loved the bbq sandwiches, too.

The prices were very reasonable, and the sandwiches were on the large side, so everyone was satiated. Once you've fueled yourself on bbq, head downtown to Penn Valley Park and let your kiddos run free, while you enjoy beautiful views of the downtown skyline.
