When visiting Charleston, it can be difficult to prioritize activities for your stay.  It’s not surprising that a city with as much history as Charleston offers over a hundred tours, so how do you pick which ones to take? If you enjoy history, beautiful scenery and people who are passionate about what they do, then I highly encourage you to take a JWalk Tour.  Currently, JWalk Tours offers two walking tours - Badass Broads and Chicora Walk. I had the privilege of taking the Badass Broads tour which pays homage to some of the coolest and most influential women, both hero and rebel, to ever walk the historic streets of Charleston.

The main reason I endorse JWalk Tours is to support Jon and his passion for sharing history.  He started the company on his own and is still the main tour guide (and you can tell he wouldn’t have it any other way).  A true love for Charleston and its history is evident in Jon’s tours.  He also begins all of his tours at Bitty and Beau’s, a unique and uplifting coffee shop that is run by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Tips:

  • The tour costs $25 per person and begin at 2pm daily (meet at Bitty and Beau’s - 159 Church St, Charleston, SC 29403)

  • The tour is 1.5 hours long and, while Jon keeps you well entertained, is very historically based, so these tours may be geared toward older kids and teens.

  • Garage parking is available nearby. (Cumberland St garage)

  • Wear comfortable shoes, dress appropriately for the weather and bring sunscreen for a summer tour.
