Kelso Dunes Trail

Kelso Dunes Trail, Baker, CA 92309

If you get there when the season is right, preferably between October and May, you and your family will love this moderate trail. It is 2.7 miles out and back with 423 feet of elevation gain. Start out on an easy, flat trail and then delight in the magnitude of the dunes you're about to hike up. The sand itself will add to the challenge of the climb, but once you reach the peak of the dune, you'll be blown away by the rewarding panoramic views.

Jump, run, and roll down these massive and forgiving sandy hills, a fun way to make up for how slow they are to climb up. We highly recommend only tackling this trail with kids when the weather is cooler. There is no shade and it becomes more challenging towards the end with higher winds and a loose, steep, sand climb.

Hiking sandals will make everyone’s life easier since they will not fill up with sand and drag you down. That being said, while there are challenging elements the trail is totally doable, and we highly recommend it. Bring water, snacks, and come prepared with sufficient fuel as there are no facilities or amenities within the preserve.
