A large playground and activity area in Northeast DC.
The park is spread out, with the playground located in the valley of the park across 20th Street from the Recreation Center. The playground is fairly new, renovated as part of Play DC. There are two sets of swings, with the baby swings are all the way on the outside eliminating the likelihood that other children will run in front of the swings while moving to and from the playground. More swings stand between them and the play area for little ones, which has slides of all different varieties and sizes. This play structure is almost entirely fenced in, preventing children from running off toward the swing area unaccompanied. Many playgrounds no longer have swings because of the risk they pose, so it is wonderful to see them included, but planned for in the safest way possible.
The pavilion is large and well-located for parents or caregivers with children of different levels because it is conveniently located between the play structure and the climbing area, designed as a challenge for older kids and capable climbers. There is also a low rock climbing wall behind it.
You can see a series of tennis courts perched on top of a hill overlooking the playground and there are picnic tables and benches all around. There are lovely trees spread throughout the area, giving the plot of land a feeling of nature in the city, and also providing a fair amount of shade.
There are a series of musical instruments just outside the climbing area, which provide a nice segue to the Chuck Brown Memorial just between the playground and the recreation center on the widespread park grounds. The memorial honors the beloved musician, DC native Chuck Brown, known as the Godfather of Go-Go.
In addition to traditional rec center facilities, this huge property features a skate park adjacent to the rec center and an outdoor pool and spray ground. The pool and spray ground were renovated in 2018 and Langdon is the only existing location in DC Parks and Rec that have both.
Restrooms are available in the rec center when it is open.
