Easy and short for families with little legs that want to make the journey on their own two feet.

If you're looking for a short hike with some cool features in Mojave National Preserve, head to the Lava Tube Trail. This short but sweet trail is only 0.5 miles out and back with 62 feet of elevation gain. It's perfect for little legs and you won't be disappointed even if you just cover a portion of the trail.

Expect to see wildflowers when they're in bloom, beautiful birds, and incredible lava tubes that lead to a cave. Some hikers recommend checking it out late afternoon on a clear day when the sun generally shines through the lava tube ceiling in certain areas. Leashed dogs are allowed as well.

Aiken Mine Road does require a high clearance vehicle for about 4 and a half miles and there is no water, gas, or food available in the park, so come prepared. The road can be accessed from the north on HWY 15 via Baker, CA. You can also access this trailhead from the south on HWY 40 via Kelbaker Rd.
