local-highlights

Northern Michigan is home to dozens of thriving wineries.

Leelanau Peninsula alone has 27 wine destinations, many with gorgeous views of Lake Michigan. I love driving up the peninsula and visiting a handful of the wineries, where you can sample wines in tasting rooms before enjoying a glass and taking in the views. My husband and I were married at Verterra Winery on the peninsula!

There are so many amazing options to enjoy the beautiful weather and ocean views all while sampling and tasting wine made right there! All of the wineries are very close together, so it is easy to hop around. Make sure you drink responsibly and hire a driver or make sure you have designated driver if you want to make a day of it. There are several maps online for you to use to plan your wine hop, or choose one and bring lawn games and entertainment for the kids to camp out all day! They all have gorgeous outdoor seating available. Several wineries in the area include the Chateay Fontaine, Good Harbor Vineyards, Bluestone Vineyards, Leelanau Wine Cellars Tasting Room, Aurora Cellars, Laurentide Winery, Amoritas Vineyard, Boathouse Vineyard, Shady Lane Cellars, Willow Vineyad & Winery, and more!

Although at first thought, a winery may not sound kid friendly, they absolutely are! Check ahead to ensure that there is food available, or pack lunches and snacks to bring so no one gets too hungry. Bring entertainment and games that kids love and even some that the adults can get in on. Many of these spots have large green spaces for kids to run and play, and you can bring a blanket for them to sit on and relax.

After graduating from the University of Michigan, she spent a decade working as a business journalist in Ann Arbor, Mich. and then Music City. She recently transitioned her journalism career to freelance writing so she could stay home with her two little boys, Milo and Jude. Lizzy grew up in the summers on a lake in beautiful Northern Michigan and she spent the winters making the most of the state's endless snow and slush. She lives by the motto "There's no such thing as bad weather" and you'll find her outside rain or shine. These days, Lizzy and the boys like to adventure around Nashville, looking for toddler-friendly hikes, parks and swimming holes.
