Don't miss this rewarding hike near Big Sky.
Lemonknob Loop (which starts at the Twin Cabins Trailhead) is only 3.7 miles long but it packs the punch for the short distance in terms of gorgeous summer wildflowers, rewarding vistas, and a 360-degree view at the top. You'll gain about 1000 feet as you head to the top, so the youngest of hikers will find it harder but doable. In terms of crowds, on a Thursday during July, we passed only two other parties on the trail.
After about 2 miles up through stunning wildflowers, you will find yourself at a saddle and you will need to take a hard left (almost 90 degrees) at this juncture to Lemonknob. Though the trail is fairly trodden, we got a little bit off track during the high grasses of summer and so we were thankful to have downloaded AllTrails before heading out.
As you continue on, you will see 'the knob' where you are headed and you will loop around until you see cairns and you'll find yourself with 360-degree breathtaking views of the area. We lingered about 30 minutes at the top enjoying water and snacks...and of course the views. It took us a little over an hour to go up and about an hour to get down.
Note: Dogs are welcome to use this trail.
Directions: Take Highway 191 five miles south of the traffic light at the junction of Highway 64. Turn left at Rainbow Ranch Lodge and take a bridge across the Gallatin River. Take an immediate left; the dirt road will lead to the trailhead where there is ample parking, an outhouse, and horse hitches.
