Follow this hike along the Accotink Creek in Fairfax!

Long Branch Trail is part of Fairfax Country's countywide trail system and runs approximately 2.75 miles from Wakefield Chapel Road to Olley Lane. It is a stone-paved path and runs along the Accotink Creek, with two bridges and plenty of areas to stop and play in the stream.

The kids and I decided to venture from our normal hikes, and we're so glad we stumbled across Long Branch Trail. The path is mostly shaded by large tree coverage so you don't have to worry about the heat, even on a hot summer day. Between the trees, mushrooms, tadpoles, and other life around the stream, there's so much to see and explore (we love looking for salamanders). The trail runs along the creek, so there are many places to access and play. I let the kids really explore and enjoy the creek.

While the trail runs through a neighborhood, you can't help but feel a distinct connection with nature. Wildlife is active and the wide path is wooded and pleasant.

If you park at Rutherford Park, stay after and play at the playground. Pack a picnic lunch and blanket. The kids and I enjoyed a full day at Long Branch Stream Trail.

Insider tip: bring bug spray.

Melody Parry Jones
Melody moved around most of her life (military family) and graduated from the University of Central Florida where she was a college athlete. Even though the beach will always feel like home, she now lives in Arlington, VA with her husband, Brent, and the #fourlittlejonesies. After stints as a flight attendant, government consultant, and sales representative for a major running brand, Melody spends her days exploring and adventuring with the kids. Whether it’s a hike, playground, bike ride/run to a playground, or nature walk, Melody and the kids are always out of the house by 9:30am (otherwise, it’s chaos). Melody is a Washington D.C. ambassador, and loves the opportunity to explore even more in the city she calls home.
