Island trails and fairy houses with serene water views.

A quick five-minute drive from Portland and over a small causeway bridge brings you to another world – the quiet, serene oasis of Mackworth Island. This island, run by the state of Maine and technically located in the nearby town of Falmouth, is about 100 acres of woods, trails, and water views.

The main hiking trail follows the perimeter of the island for 1.5 miles and is a great hike for families with small children. Adults and older children will enjoy the views of Casco Bay and the nearby east end of Portland. About ¾ of the way through the trail (if you follow it counter-clockwise), you’ll come upon Fairy Village filled with up to hundreds of fairy houses, something that Mackworth Island is known for. Encourage your little ones to check them out, play a bit, and even create their own fairy house out of the natural materials found on the ground!
