A great nature center in Baltimore County with trails, water and animals!

The Nature Center at Marshy Point is quite large and has plenty for the kids to touch and learn about. You’ll find animal skeletons, fish and reptile tanks, and a sensory table, among other displays. If you arrive at the right time, you might also get to see Franky the Duck and Clarice the Starling wandering around. If you haven’t had your fill of fowl, you can also go outside to see turkeys and chickens, as well as some birds of prey.

When you’re ready to hike, Marshy Point has you covered. There are over eight miles of trails to choose from and they are all great. The Katie and Wil trail is a .6 mile paved path through the forest that leads to the bluebird field. It’s wide and flat and a great spot for a short scooter ride or stroller run. You can also gain access to the Dundee-Saltpeter trail from the nature center. Be sure to pick up a guidebook at the trailhead so that you can follow the self-guided nature tour along the way. There's also the White Tail Trail. It’s an easy half-mile hike that ends at Iron Point, a lookout where you’ll be able to see across Dundee Creek, all the way to Gunpowder Falls State Park.

If you’ve got a canoe, you’ll want to bring it so that you can paddle Baltimore County’s first-ever aquatic trail. Marshy Point also hosts canoe trips throughout the spring and summer where they provide canoes for those of us that aren’t lucky enough to own one. If you don’t want to get in the water, you can still check out the scenic views from the piers behind the Nature Center. And, ff the kids have any energy left, they can burn it off on the boat turned playground that sits next to the parking lot.

The grounds have lots of picnic tables throughout and there is a bathroom available in the center when it’s open, otherwise there's a portable toilet available. The Nature Center is open from 9 am to 5 pm every day (except holidays), and the park is open from 9am to sunset every day. You’ll find friendly staff inside the nature center that will answer any and all questions that you have.

If you’re looking for a picturesque spot to spend a day, look no further than Marshy Point.

Our work in Baltimore is truly a family affair. Husband and wife, Matt and Katie, work together to head up our ambassador team in Charm City. Katie is a Maryland native and has lived in the state her whole life. She moved to Baltimore in 2007 after graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. She has been working in the field of early childhood education as a teacher and family coach for the past 12 years. Katie also holds a Masters of Education in Literacy from Loyola University. She is passionate about giving kids and families the knowledge and tools that they need to thrive. Matt grew up in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore. As a city native, Matt is a great resource on all that the city has to offer. After months of helping Katie explore the city for her role at a Happy Active Family, he decided to put his love of writing to use and officially come on board as an ambassador. Matt and Katie have two girls, ages 5 and 7. They spend their weekends camping, hiking, or exploring other hidden gems in their area. Tap into their insider knowledge by downloading the app today!
