Portland's Kennedy School is a School the Kids will Beg to go!

There are a vareity of activities for the family to enjoy at Portland's Kennedy School! This historic elementary school was opened in 1915, closed in 1975 due to declining enrollment and crumbling structure, and finally renovated for its current multi-purpose use in 1997. Grab a bite to eat in one of the kid-friendly restaurants and bars, drop in for a “crybaby matinee”, soak in the saline outdoor heated pool, or even book a hotel room for a little vacation!

The salt water soaking pool is an absolute gem, especially in winter when outdoor activities are scarce. It’s located outside nestled among trees, bamboo, large frond palms, and manicured shrubs. The pool’s steam floating off the water’s surface and ceramic art flair gives the experience a tropical vibe. It’s open to patrons of all ages and the warm saline water provides a spa-like experience with the kids in tow.

Kids can even practice their floating skills in this extra-buoyant environment! Keep in mind that the ideal use of this pool is hanging out and soaking. Diving, jumping, horseplay and swim toys are not permitted, however it is not uncommon to see school-age kiddos playfully dunk down underwater with goggles and practice their floating. Make sure to bring a photo ID for every adult, plus swimsuit, towel, lock, and a change of clothes.

There are lockers available in a small room immediately before you enter the pool area, but during busy times, the lockers may be all occupied. We suggest you either leave valuables at home, locked in the car, or take a small tote with you into the pool area and stash it to the side. Occasionally there is a waiting list to get into the pool, but don’t worry! Drop in to one of the three kid-friendly restaurants to grab a bite to eat and perhaps one of the rotating beers on tap. If you’re called for the pool opening, drinks can be transferred into a plastic cup and brought into the pool area.

There are three family-friendly places to eat within the Kennedy School: Courtyard restaurant, Cypress room and the Kennedy School Theater Bar. The kid’s menu plays it safe with burgers, pizza, corn dogs, grilled cheese, bean bowls and PB&Js. Multiple large, ornate lanterns hanging from the ceiling and live plants draped around the room give these restaurants a stimulating yet cozy vibe. For the adults in the group there are many cocktails and rotating beers on tap. Drop in from 3-6pm to take advantage of the happy hour food and drink menu.

What do you miss most since becoming a parent? Cross “going to the movies” off your list because the Kennedy School offers “crybaby matinees” every Tuesday through Thursday. These are second-run feature films offered at a discounted price that your baby is actually invited to. You also aren’t limited to the stiff cinema chairs that hardly recline. Instead, get cozy in one of the large sofas or comfy arm chairs. You’ll have to stick to PG movies but at least you can get out and enjoy one! Cost is $5 for patrons 13 and older and $3 for kids 3-12. Order some pizza, popcorn, candy and a drink from the Kennedy School Theater Bar and have it delivered to you in the theater so you don’t miss the movie.

If you wanted to really go big, book a room for the night. The rooms in the main school building include charming school touches like the original chalkboards and cloakrooms. In addition, all overnight guests receive complimentary use of the soaking pool and free admission to the movie theater. Rooms are pet friendly, too! With its rich history, funky decor and family friendly activities, the Kennedy School offers fun for everyone.
