There's a reason this South Minneapolis staple has lasted the test of time, and you'll taste it in their sweet pastries!
You know you're in for a fun time when the signs outside the bakery claim their donuts are the cure for Covid! This funky, classic bakery in South Minneapolis is just charming and is certainly family-friendly. The kids and I were enchanted by this place, the moment we walked up.
We were immediately greeted by the friendly neighborhood turkey (yep, you heard that right!), immediately followed by the wonderful staff inside the bakery. She told us that Kevin was the delightful, feathery chap we'd met outside, and they'd named him after Kevin from the movie Up. I haven't seen this movie in a while now, so our chance encounter has definitely sparked my desire to rewatch it. We later watched, as Kevin held up traffic on the busy city street for what seemed like an eternity, as he sauntered across the road, squawking at the line of cars. It was hilarious!
Inside, we found a delightful assortment of delicious cookies, donuts, baklava, and other sweets, all freshly baked on-site. Included in their line-up was a beautiful Dr. Fauci cookie, complete with a teeny, tiny mask. The staff informed me that after their original Christmas-themed Fauci cookie became a bestseller, they decided to follow it up with Valentines and St Patty's Day Fauci's, as well. The result is a hilarious, delicious-looking cookie that only adds to their wonderful assortment. They also featured "Kiss Me I'm Irish" sandwich cookies, which were both beautiful and incredible-tasting. I was delighted to see good old-fashioned "elephant ear" pastries, as I can still recall sitting with my grandma in Arizona as a kid, having elephant ears for a treat with her. The kids were delighted to taste one of their great-grandmother's favorites.
The sweets here are laced with their signature citrus flavor, which I wasn't aware of, so it initially caught me off guard. I liked it, but I just didn't know this was their signature, so it had me wondering if we'd ordered a lemon donut. It was subtle though, so no worries for you lemon foes.
The prices here were literally unbelievable, especially for such a hip area as South Minneapolis, with gorgeous cookies for just a dollar. Between Kevin the wild turkey, the delicious treats, and the wonderful staff, our kids were in heaven. They thought this place was magical....and memorable. And I'm always glad when a little outing turns out to be an experience for the kids. I can't recommend this place highly enough.
After meeting Kevin (from a distance, of course) and choosing a little something, head right over to the beautiful and historic Lyndale Farmstead Park for some playground fun, ice skating, or just plain old nature fun.
