The Mid-South Steamers event is a train enthusiast dream!

The Mid-South Live Steamers host three events a year that give the public a chance to ride 7 ½ inch gauge trains. These little, but powerful steam engines transport their riders around Maury County Park and over 2 miles of track. The track winds through tunnels, over bridges, past turntables, and up 3% grades. The train ride is around 5-10 minutes long and gives the riders plenty of time to enjoy the experience. The public can ride the trains for free, but they welcome donations.

The train station is set up next to the playground in Maury County Park and there you check-in, sign a waiver and board the train. There is parking next to the playground. The event is very popular and can be crowded on weekends. They recommend arriving right when it opens to avoid hour-plus long waits. We visited on a Friday and did not have to wait long.

After you ride the train, be sure to check out the steaming bay, where the club members work on their trains. My son loved walking through this area and looking at all the different engines and train cars. The bay is right next to the large red caboose and old steam engine. The playground is also fun and is a great pre or post train ride activity.

The three events take place in May, September, and October. The upcoming October 2020 dates are Oct 23-24 from 10 am - 2 pm. Be sure to check their Facebook page before you go for any changes.
