North Countys finest family beach
Moonlight Beach is a California State park and is run by the city of Encinitas. Being a State park, it is very well maintained with great amenities for your family. Before you reach the water, you'll immediately encounter a wide sandy area before it dips down towards the water, giving guests plenty of space to play or spread out your gear. Once in the water, you'll notice a gradual slope as you get deeper, which is a lot safer for swimming. Lifeguards also have a great presence here with multiple towers located along the sandy shore. This beach allows surfing outside of the swimming zones. At low tide, you can walk this beach for miles in either direction. Wagons or jogging strollers could make this beach trek successfully, there are two ramps on each side of the beach originating from the sidewalk that extend towards the water to make it easier for beach go-ers with wheels.
A few other great amenities at this swimming location are the three volleyball courts with nets, bathrooms, showers, picnic tables, bon fire pits and a concession stand with items ranging from paninis to shaved ice. A few steps away from the beach is a popular playground and grassy area, so if the kids want to take a break from catching waves they can head up and run around the play structure!
This is a popular spot during the summer, so parking can tend to get difficult during those peak times. There is a large parking lot above the beach, free of charge. There is also a lot of untimed street parking, even if you have to walk a few blocks you can usually find something not too far.
Make sure to stop by Handel's ice-cream, a few blocks away on the 101, for a tasty treat to keep you cool after a warm day in the sun!
