outdoor-adventures, hikes, camping

Just an hour away from Charlotte and one of the highest mountain views in the Piedmont area.

This state park has a little bit of everything. Mountain overlook views, fishing, boat ramp, hiking, equestrian trails, camping, and pool swimming. More than 15 miles of hiking trails and 16 miles of bridle trails thread the park, reaching from the summit of Morrow Mountain to Lake Tillery. There are 106 sites to camp including sites with electricity and even some rustic cabins available to reserve.

There are many family-friendly trails in the park. Our personal favorites are the Mountain trail loop (2.6 miles), Hattaway Mountain trail (2.0 miles), and the Fall Mountain trail (4.1 miles). The mountain trail loop takes you all the way up to see the main viewing point of Morrow Mountain. This has a steep climb at the end but it is worth the effort. If you don’t want to hike this trail, you can drive to the top to look at the view as well.

The Hattaway mountain trail is a steady climb to the top. This is definitely a moderate trail that will get your heart pumping but the top of the mountain is flat to look around and catch your breath. The Fall Mountain trail is long but easier than the other two trails. It has a gradual climb and makes a big loop. This is a good one overall for the family. These trails are not stroller-friendly so a carrier is needed.

Visit the visitor center for trail maps and information about the area.

The camping section of the park is done in three different loops (A, B, C). A and B loops are both nonelectric but have potable water spigots throughout and bathhouses with hot showers. Loop C has 22 electric sites and 6 wheelchair accessible sites, a bathhouse with hot showers, and potable water available. There is also a dump station for when you leave. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring.

Get packed for a long weekend or a great day trip!
