Mothers Meadow is a playground located in Golden Gate Park only a short walk away from Stow Lake.

This beautiful green space was first created as a safe haven for parents and their children when Golden Gate Park used to have more dangerous pastimes such as racing horses! Ever since then it has been a favorite place for picnics, playdates, and to simply enjoy the outdoors. The surrounding trees provide a nice bit of shade and the big grassy areas are great for running, playing Frisbee, or kicking a soccer ball.

The play structure has a slight retro feel to it, with lots of monkey bars and climbing features. It encourages kids to get creative and to really work off some of that never-ending supply of energy they seem to have! There are bucket swings as well as big kid swings and a few slides. It would be fun to bring a few sand toys to play with, as the playground is situated on a giant sand pit. There are some fun places to explore along the tree line for those that enjoy searching for fairy houses and collecting twigs and berries for their “restaurants.”

There are paths leading from either side of the park which take you over to Stow Lake. Here you can rent a boat and explore the stone bride and waterfall from the water. Or you can choose to continue your walk/hike and circle the lake or cross one of the bridges to the island route and go up alongside the waterfall.

Emily Coleman
Emily Coleman is a Jersey girl born and raised who caught the outdoor bug upon moving to Vermont to pursue a degree in Adventure Education and Environmental Studies from Green Mountain College. She spent most of her years before college deeply entrenched in the world of competitive cheerleading before discovering a passion for outdoor sports including mountain biking, white water kayaking, bikepacking, backpacking, slacklining, rock climbing, and skiing. Having been surrounded by children her entire life in her mother's daycare, she always had a strong affinity for kids. She moved to the mountains of Jackson Hole after graduating to coach for the local Kayak Club during the summers and nanny in the winters. Becoming a part of the Happy Active Family team felt like the perfect collision of her passion for building strong community bonds and encouraging an outdoor lifestyle.
