outdoor-adventures, hikes

There are no shortage of incredible views at this short hike, perfect for your little ones.

About an hour's drive out of the city will take you to this enchanting area, Mount Laguna. Filled with countless rewarding trails, Foster Point is one of the best for children. Located right off the famous Pacific Crest Trail, Foster Point can be reached a few ways. The route is described here starts at the Horse Heaven Group Camp parking area, or the dirt-parking area directly across from the Group Camp along Sunrise Highway and will have a 100-foot elevation gain. Horse Heaven Group Camp is located thirteen miles north of Interstate 8 on the Sunrise Highway.

The trail begins from the dirt-parking area along Sunrise Highway, going slightly uphill for about .4 miles and then intersecting with the Pacific Crest Trail. From this junction it is less than a .5 mile trek to the Foster Point entrance, you will see a sign designating which way to take. Upon entering this last stretch to the Point, you will almost immediately take in one of the best views from the Pacific Crest Trail in all of San Diego. Foster Point, sitting at 5,730 feet above sea level, has three hundred and sixty-degree views of the Cleveland National Forest to the North, South and West and Anza-Borrego Desert to the East. It is the ultimate snack spot. This short but very sweet hike can be extended by continuing your hike along the PCT in either direction.

If you're exploring this hike during the fall, there are usually a few meteor showers during this time and this trail is the perfect place to watch the action. Pack a thermos of hot cocoa, a blanket and put on some fun glow necklaces and look up!

This trailhead has no bathrooms, the nearest public bathrooms will be at the Mount Laguna Visitor Center, about 2 miles before you get to the trail. A stroller can be used but may get tricky at one or two spots. Due to the short distance of this hike, your regular workout clothes will be fine.

Once finished hiking, stop by Mom's Bakery in the historic town of Julian for a slice of their deliciously famous apple pie! Or stop by (also famous) Alpine Beer Company, they have great food, beers and a kid-friendly outdoor area.
