A visit to the Black Hills isn't complete without visiting this iconic National Monument.
Mount Rushmore is truly something special to behold for the whole family. The creation of Mount Rushmore lasted from 1927 to 1941 and features 60-foot images of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Thomas Jefferson. These four presidents were chosen to represent our country's birth, growth, development, and preservation.
Located inside the monument, you'll see a plaque dedicated to all those who worked on Mount Rushmore. The Avenue of Flags will show you the way towards the mountain viewing area, and features the flags of all states, territories, and commonwealths. You may also visit the sculptor's studio, where Gutzon Borglum worked, and which features a scale model of Mount Rushmore.
Not only is this National Monument a bucket-list destination for many, but it's also an economical stop in your South Dakota itinerary. Though many people expect a National Parks pass will gain you free admission to Mount Rushmore, it's actually a National Monument, rather than part of a National Park. This iconic National Monument is technically free, however, although parking will cost you a fee. Cars, motorcycles, and RVs cost $10, seniors cost $5, and active military are free. Parking also includes electric vehicle chargers. This monument is, of course, busiest during the summer months, but is just as beautiful (and far less crowded) during the shoulder months. After enjoying the beautiful sight of Mount Rushmore, continue your drive through the Black Hills, and check out the historic trains in Hill City, South Dakota, at the South Dakota State Railroad Museum.
